Histological Analysis and Immunohistochemistry Renal sections (3 μm thick) were stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and examined under light microscopy. Glomerulosclerosis index was semiquantitatively graded as 0 to 4+; vascular injury score as 0 to 3+; and tubulointerstitial injury score as 0 to 5+, according to the criteria reported previously. Ultrastructure of glomerular podocytes was analyzed using transmission electron microscope, as described previously. Immunohistochemistry of desmin, nephrin, and ED-1 was carried out as described previously. The number of ED-1-positive cells was counted in 20 randomly selected high-power fields (x200) and averaged. Glomerular desmin staining was semiquantitatively graded as 0 to 4+. All morphometric measurements were performed by a blinded observer (n=4 for each group).
